Janet Mills herself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because Mainers voted some strong, progressive lawmakers into office last election year (read more about some of these legislators <a href=\"https:\/\/mainepeoplesalliance.org\/scorecard\/special-mentions\/\">here!<\/a>), advocates for positive social change in Maine had many more champions in the legislature. These leaders have fought for rent relief, tenant protections and new solutions to Maine\u2019s housing crisis; to defend the rights of Maine\u2019s workers; to strengthen our public health response to the opioid crisis; for recognition of the inherent sovereignty of the Wabanaki people in Maine; to welcome immigrants into our communities and our state; and to ensure that rich corporations that do business in Maine don\u2019t get special privileges. They also fought against cuts to government funding that would have harmed many people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also worked with allies to allow for a realistic opportunity to develop offshore wind power in Maine. This will help Mainers control our energy future, contribute to the region\u2019s shift to renewable energy, and create good green jobs for people in our state.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a 40-year-old man shot and killed 18 people at a Lewiston bowling alley in October of 2023, it put gun safety at the top of the legislative agenda, with lawmakers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mainegunsafety.org\/introduction-to-legislative-priorities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">introducing several bills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to make Mainers safer from gun violence. Mainers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangordailynews.com\/2024\/01\/03\/politics\/gun-control-rally-lewiston-shooting-maine-legislature-xoasq1i29i\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">joined together powerfully<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to support expanding gun safety laws in Maine, and had some success in spite of opposition from the powerful gun lobby.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gov. Mills didn\u2019t support the sweeping reforms that gun safety advocates pressed for, and this reflected a broader trend on many issues \u2013 including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mainemorningstar.com\/2024\/01\/17\/its-time-to-change-course-mainers-implore-lawmakers-to-try-different-approach-to-substance-use\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drug policy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mainebeacon.com\/embarrassing-and-shameful-advocates-blast-mills-veto-of-farmworker-rights-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">labor rights and protections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mainebeacon.com\/tribal-leaders-blast-mills-veto-of-wabanaki-sovereignty-bill-as-protecting-an-old-guard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tribal sovereignty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangordailynews.com\/2022\/08\/23\/politics\/janet-mills-campaign-wont-raise-taxes-n6hjn1me0n\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tax fairness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 where the governor\u2019s stances were more conservative than those of many of her constituents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why does Gov. Mills\u2019 disapproval matter so much? During her tenure, Gov. Mills has not had one of her vetoes overridden \u2013 and the threat of a very-likely-successful veto can have a chilling effect on bold, transformative proposals. This year, numerous bills met their ends when the governor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pressherald.com\/2024\/05\/14\/gov-mills-wont-sign-35-last-minute-spending-bills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opted not to sign<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> any of the bills legislators passed on \u201cveto day\u201d after the regular session \u2013 including bills that would have created more health insurance options for childcare providers, and establish both a statewide sexual assault forensic examination kit tracking system and a unit to enforce violations of the Maine Civil Rights Act.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With paid family and medical leave, the expansion of the state child tax credit, improvements in our childcare system, and more,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we did so much in 2023 that people might have expected us to sit back this year. But, because we joined together, worked hard, stayed nimble when things changed, and kept our eyes on the prize, we were able to do more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, we\u2019re not there yet. But we\u2019re a little closer, and in this election year we\u2019ll keep working and voting for candidates who will stand with us on our vision for Maine. We\u2019re excited about continuing to help MPA members push for the things we all care about, and to keep fighting for a world where everyone has what they need, contributes what they can, and no one is left behind.
